Workshop Recap: Stop Over for Your Future Facilitated by Benedicta Chukwuyem Apuamah | AAI, Salzburg

On 11th April 2026, we hosted “Stop Over for Your Future” — an interactive workshop designed not as a motivational talk, but as a working session for internationally-based young professionals navigating career transitions.
Inspired by Biking Through Africa & Beyond, the session challenged participants to reframe career pauses not as failures, but as intentional stopovers — moments to recalibrate, reflect, and move with purpose.

What We Covered
The workshop moved through four key areas. We opened by introducing the Stop-Over Concept — the idea that most people don’t fail, they simply pause without direction. Participants then worked through the 4C Framework (Context, Challenge, Choice, Competency), learning to mine their own lived experiences for career capital. A reflective discussion on Borders, Bias & Bold Moves followed, exploring both geographical and mental borders. We closed with a guided “Designing Your Next Stop” exercise, where each participant committed to one skill to strengthen, one conversation to have, and one step to take within 30 days.

What Participants Came For
From the opening poll, participants arrived looking for: career counseling, confidence, interview preparation, building their support network, and understanding how to become a more competitive applicant in the European job market.

What They’re Taking Away
The feedback spoke for itself:

“Stay Motivated and Keep Applying.”

“Cross the borders set by minds and move ahead with one straight goal by trying all possible ways.”

“How to build proper confidence — improve positive thinking and destroy negative thoughts. Also about the legal requirements of the RWR card.”

“Do not get disappointed. Just go for it. Do internships.”

“I learned that one of the most important skills to have for a peaceful life is patience.”

On the real-life stories: participants found them grounding, motivating, and practically useful — several noted that combining personal experience (like a thesis or relocation) with career narrative was a new and empowering perspective.

Key Takeaway from the Day
“Global careers are built through intentional discomfort. Stay in the room long enough until you grow into it.”
